Hypertension or High Blood Pressure (HBP) is a condition in which blood pressure in the arteries persistently increases. Although hypertension does not bring any symptoms, long-term hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke, coronary artery disease, heart failure, vision loss, chronic kidney disease, and dementia. Roughly, 90-95% of cases are primary hypertension, while the remaining 5-10% are secondary hypertension. Primary hyper tension is caused by genetic or nonspecific lifestyle factors such as excess salt in the diet, excess body weight, smoking, and alcohol use. Therefore, lifestyle changes, such as weight loss, exercise, salt intake reduction, and alcohol intake reduction could decrease the risk of hypertension and health complications. Secondary hypertension is caused by identified sources such as kidney disease, endocrine disorder, pregnancy, and use of birth control pills.
