K-12 Community-Oriented Mathematical Modelling Program
Empowering the Next Generation of Black Mathematicians in Canada
Executive Summary
In response to evolving labor market demands, particularly the growing need for quantitative and STEM-based skills, the K12-MathMods initiative is designed to equip 300 Black students across Canada with essential mathematical modeling skills. Through a curriculum grounded in real-world community problems, the program aims to develop positive math mindsets, reduce anxiety, fill knowledge gaps, and ensure long-term inclusion in future employment landscapes.
Instructor Team
Our instructors are a dedicated group of Black mathematicians — including undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and professors from institutions across Canada — all committed to supporting Black youth in mathematics.
To date, we have:
- 20 Black undergraduate mathematics students
- 10 Black graduate mathematics students
- 8 Black postdocs
- 7 Black mathematics professors
These instructors have supported ongoing programs such as Maths Help for Black Students and Summer Mathematics Review Sessions. Weekly drop-in tutoring sessions continue to benefit 40+ students in grades 8–12.
Community Engagement
We work closely with parents through direct outreach, especially in Black churches across the Greater Toronto Area. Registration is facilitated via this link, and current enrollment has reached capacity due to high demand.
Partner Organizations
Our key school board partner is the Durham Catholic District School Board. Additional program partners include:
- Canadian Black Scientist Network
- Parents of Black Children
- Leadership by Design Program
- Youth Research and Evaluation Exchange
- Black Creek Community Health Centre
- Delta Family Resource Centre
- Network for the Advancement of Black Communities (NABC)
- WoodGreen Social Services
- RESQ Youth
- Peel District School Board
Program Objectives
General Objective
Create a sustainable and inclusive K-12 mathematical modeling program tailored to Black youth, enhancing their readiness for future careers in STEM and leadership roles.
Specific Objectives
- Strengthening Real-Life Mathematics Application: Train students to apply mathematics to solve real-world problems sourced from their communities.
- Cultivating Positive Mathematical Mindsets: Foster a growth mindset and reduce math anxiety through engaging and accessible instruction.
- Enhancing STEM Preparedness: Improve academic performance in key areas such as algebra and calculus to boost post-secondary STEM readiness.
DCDSB families are invited to attend Empowering Our Community Through Mathematics, an interactive networking event, panel discussion, and keynote address featuring Alexander Coleman and Carl E. James.
This event is designed to help families support their children in embracing quantitative skills that are vital for future career opportunities. Discussions will center on empowering Black students to DO math and SEE math in everyday life—shifting mindsets and encouraging future STEM pathways.
